ttml2ssa - provide better looking subtitles for your addons

Ttml2ssa is a library for Kodi which can help you provide better looking subtitles for your addons.

Even though Kodi is a great software it allows very little customization of subtitles (SRT format), you can mainly only change the color, that's all. Subtitles usually look better on other media players.

However Kodi also supports subtitles in SSA/ASS format, which are more customizable, for example you can add a shadow, set an outline color... It's also possible to place the subtitles on the top of the screen.

Ttml2ssa is a library that can convert TTML/XML/DFXP/VTT/SRT subtitles used by Netflix, HBO, Disney+, Prime Video and other stream services to the SSA/ASS format (it can also convert to SRT and VTT). It provides a configuration dialog where the user can select the font size, colors, shadow and many other things. This configuration is shared by all addons that use the ttml2ssa library, so the user only has to set up his preferences in one place.

Another benefit: subtitles will be displayed on top of the screen when necessary (just like the official apps of Netflix, Disney+ and others do).

Ttml2ssa can also perform some cosmetic changes so the subtitles style is the same among different services.

Using the library is quite easy, it only requires a few lines of code to convert and save a subtitle.

As demonstration there's available a Kodi repository with modified versions of the Netflix, Amazon VOD, Disney+ and hbogoeu(*) addons with support for ttml2ssa: https://github.com/Paco8/kodi-repo

(*) The support for ttml2ssa in hbogoeu is only available for Nordic/Spain.

Subtitles don't work on a specific movie

I normally download subtitles from OpenSubtitles.org easily and effectively.

However, for the UK movie Ratcatcher, I cannot get them to show. OpenSubtitles have 14 available and I have tried downloading several without viewing success. They download OK as I can see them in the appropriate place using Explorer on my Windows 10 HTPC.

When I press "T" the dialog says Subtitles Not available but the file VIDEO_TS.en.srt is there in the movie root directory. After I download a fresh one the dialog says Subtitles Unknown but displays one line of the subtitles for a second but none further.

Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Cheers

Most of the time Subtitles are Not Available

I'm using Kodi on OSMC and I've added opensubtitles.org
A lot of the time I get "subtitles not available". I seem to be getting a slightly better hit rate for TV vs Movies. Here is the log file:
ilepaxuhew.kodi (paste)

Even though I have the setting to store the subtitles in the same folder as the video, when I look in the folder for the ones that *do* work, there is no subtitle file.
All the videos are on a directory on the network that is shared, and mounted in OSMC.

TV
Subtitles available:
  • Fargo
  • Billions

Subtitles not available:
  • Chimerica
  • Better Call Saul
  • Black Mirror

Movies
Subtitles available
  • The Vast of Night
Subtitles not available:
  • Blade Runner 2049
  • We Need to Talk About Kevin
  • Upgrade
  • Straight Outa Compton
  • Steve Jobs

enable subtitles by default?

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if there's any way to enable, in any "generic" capacity , subtitles to be on by default on any media files I open?

By "generic" I suspect kodi, when I select as "default for all media" when playing a file, will try to enable subtitles only if they fit the precise criteria of that file I was viewing at that moment which is unlikely in the future.

Thanks guys

-Dave

OpenSubtitles give English only as search result

I am using Kodi 19.1 (Matrix) on a Nebula Capsule Beamer-MediaPlayer (which runs Android 8 I think). This Kodi Version is offered by the players own app repository.

I installed OpenSubtitles.org AddOn and give my login credentials. This works. When I watch a video and do "Download subtitles" in the subtitle menu I only got english subtitles as a result.

But everything is configured to my local language "German"
 - The Nebula device (or its Android) itself
 - The Kodi instance, its skin/ui
 - The provile in my OpenSubtitles.org website is set to prefer German also.

The AddOn itself does not offer a language setting like the search field on the website does.

dailymotion-soft subs

Is there a way to enable soft subs in dailymotion addon?

Kodi subscene add-on error

Hi,

I'm getting an error while downloading the subtitle.  I'm using the add-on from this link and using Kodi Matrix 19.3:
https://github.com/AnonTester/kodi-repo/...-1.9.5.zip

I checked the log and it has the following errors, can anyone help me as to why it can't getDirectory (i've checked that the subscene.zip file exists in that location) and why it can't download subs.
Here's the log

Subtitles Add-ons not Working on Xbox

I have been using the Kodi app for years on my Xbox One S. But for months now the subtitles Add-ons just stopped working.

Everytime I try to download subs, I immediately get an error message before any subs are listed: "OpenSubtitles.org error - Check the log for more information".

The debug log is on but I can't find any option on Kodi to view the log, only the Event Log, that shows nothing about the errors.

That happens to all sub services I use, Open subtitles and Legendas.TV. I tried uninstalling them and installing again. I tried installing different subtitles Add-ons. I tried resetting Kodi to default settings, and uninstalling It and installing again. Nothing worked.

I think it might have something to do with those python updates Kodi received. Because around the same time, the Information Providers stopped working. The on for Movies was auto changed to "The Movie Database Python". And I had to switch back to "The Movie Database" to make it work again. I can't find any way to do the same with the subtitles Add-ons.

Is anyone facing the same issue? Any hints on how to fix it?

Since the people at home doesn't speak English, that problem really killed Kodi for me.

opensubtitles.org plugin not working

Just tried to download a subtitle for a movie using the OpenSubtitles.org plugin installed on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro.

It said that my username or password were wrong, so I went investigating since it had worked fine many times before. It appears the OpenSubtitles.org website has been hacked and they have created a new website at OpenSubtitles.com, which has create a bit of an issue with the OpenSubtitles.org plugin. It is pointing at the wrong URL with no way to redirect it to the new URL.

Has anyone got a work around for this problem, since most of the other options listed in Kodi Addons are either not in English or have dubious websites that come up with a warning?

Is there a configuration files somewhere that contains the URL, that can be edited?

a4ksubtitles not working?

Using kodi 19.3 and a4ksubtitles 3.3.0. But a4ksubtitles doesnt find anything when searching and it shows message "imdb id is not provided".

Anyone else with this problem?

Export / Live stream subtitles

I would like to be able to render subtitles to a separate display but have not had any luck trying to determine if there is a plug-in API for streaming / pushing subtitles live / real-time so that an external program or script can then render them to the second display.

Does such an API exist or is there some way to get this information during playback?

Cheers,
Martin Z.

Automatic Subtitles Choice

I have subtitles working the way I want - with one exception.
Every time I open a movie, TV Show or anything, the subtitles option appears.
I can hit the "back" button to remove this.
I do not want this to be so automatic.
Obviously, I am missing something.
I only want to select subtitles as I require them. On this point alone, I have this set up very well.

No rights to store subtitles on NFS share

I am using LibreELEC 9.2.8 with Linux Kernel 4.19.127 on an Raspberry Pi 2B. The video content is on an NFS server in the local network.
Kodi does find the server and I can access the content.

I use the OpenSubtitles.org AddOn. It is configured to store the subtitles in the same folder as the videos. It finds subtitles in the internet and also use them while the film is running. But the subtitle files are not stored in the folder. There is not error message about that.

I assume this is because there are not enough rights. When I log into the server via SSH and modify the folder rights (via sudo chmod) manually. The AddOn is able to store the subtitles. I give the "others" group write access to that folder.

Here you see the configuration of that share which has "rw" access.
$ cat /etc/exports | grep Media | grep 31
/Daten/Media    192.168.178.31(rw,async)

The problematic folder rights are this, shown via SSH-shell on the server
Code:
drwxrwxr-x

But when I modify them to this the subtitle thing work
Code:
drwxrwxrwx

I learned that the NFS shares are not mounted the "usual way". There is no mount point in the underlying GNU Linux system.

Kodi Firestick- Matrix Movie & TV Shows Subtitles.

Can someone please help?
I am unable to use OpenSubtitles for Kodi films.
I have registered but, when trying to log in to opensubtitles.org, I complete up to
the Captcha process but then am given 2 minutes to copy and paste a box of text to a blank box.
I am unable to do this with my Firestick Lite remote control.
Can someone please advise how to do this - or another method to receive these subs?

(More a Question) Quickly turn subtitles on/off.

In advance. I use Kodi on Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Everyone knows it... You're watching a series/film and suddenly the characters are talking in their native language, but hardcoded subs are missing.
Off to the WWW, but nowhere are subs offered that only cover these parts.

And the Procedure to turn on/off Subs the normal way honestly doesn't make the film or the series any better either.

Hence, the question, is there an add-on with which I can somehow, easily, switch subs on and off?
